A crew honored for showing up.
PWI CORE Crew #12 received recognition for its volunteer service at the Navy Marine Corps Relief Society thrift store in Imperial Beach.
The crew began volunteering at the thrift store on July 16, 2019. Week after week, members sorted, organized, and supported the store's daily work. The routine became a place to practice job skills and to be part of a community.
On December 11, 2019, the store held an award ceremony and holiday party. The crew was recognized for its service. Parents and PWI staff were invited to attend. The afternoon included food, games, conversation, and time to celebrate the people who had given their time.
Why recognition matters
Volunteer work is real work. It builds punctuality, teamwork, and the confidence that comes from being counted on. When a community partner pauses to say thank you, it reinforces that contribution. It also shows other employers what people with disabilities bring to a workplace.
About the partner
The Navy Marine Corps Relief Society provides financial assistance and support to sailors, Marines, and their families. PWI is grateful for the opportunity to serve alongside the organization at its Imperial Beach thrift store.
